2. Taxi Driver (1976)

Leonard Maltin's Rating :
Should be :

IMDB Rating : 8.5

Rotten Tomatoes Rating : 98%

Leonard really seemed to miss a great movie here. He said in his two star review : "To some, Scorsese and writer Paul Scrader's perception of hell- as a crazed taxi driver's vision of NYC - was brilliant. To us, this gory, cold-blooded story of a sick man's lurid descent into violence is ugly and unredeeming."

For some movies there is room for argument. This is not one of them. A great movie on all levels that is even more relevant today than it was when it was made.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus, which I agree with completely, says : "A must-see film for movie lovers, this Martin Scorsese masterpiece is as hard-hitting as it is compelling, with Robert De Niro at his best."

The 2012 Sight and Sound Poll, probably the most prestigious of all the film lists, has Taxi Driver Number 5 in the Directors Poll (here)

Leonard should change his rating. 98% of the other reviewers can't be wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, it's time that Leonard admitted this one.
