Leonard Maltin's Rating :

Should be :

IMDB Rating : 7.6
Rotten Tomatoes Rating : 85%
Rotten Tomatoes Synopsis : "The ending may be less than satisfying, but Denzel Washington reminds us why he's such a great actor in this taut and brutal police drama."
In his review Leonard says: "Starts off strongly, then gets dumber and dumber, abadoning credibility for melodrama, coincidences and a cartoonlike climax."
The movie is about detective Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington), a veteran narcotics cop who is training rookie Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) over a twenty four hour period. Alonzo does things that are at least border-line illegal but in some ways it seems as if he gets the job done.
This was meant to be a really realistic view of life on the streets and Denzel was just tremendous. Denzel won the Oscar for Best Actor and Ethne Hawke was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
A very popular, well done movie that is much better then the two stars Leonard gave it.
