69. The Virgin Spring (1960)
Leonard Maltin's Rating :
Should be :
IMDB Rating : 8.1
Rotten Tomatoes Rating : 94%
In his review Leonard says: "Fascinating, beautifully made, an Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film."
Set in 14th century Sweden, this film by Ingmar Bergman is about a peasant family whose daughter is raped and murdered by a group of men passing by.
The movie is about faith, revenge and redemption. The movie has some brutal scenes and at times is difficult to watch. But it is beautifully filmed period piece and is wonderfully acted.
A very interesting movie from Bergman that has elements of some of the modern day crime/revenge dramas, but Bergman frames it all in larger questions aboutthe nature of man and of God.
Leonard had a very positive review, but a very mediocre rating for this graet movie which I just don't get.

Well, at least he gave it the same rating as "Daredevil" and "Waterworld"... I'm sure Bergman would be happy about that...
ReplyDeleteIn the Swedish edition of Maltin's movie guide, this film got four stars out of four.
