Martin Scorsese takes on late 19th century New York and creates an almost perfect period piece. I really liked what Vincent Canby said about this great movie : "Mr. Scorsese has made a big, intelligent movie that functions as if it were a window on a world he had just discovered, and about which he can't wait to spread the news."
Mr. Maltin in his review says : "Sumptuous adaption of Edith Wharton's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about repressed emotions in a convention-bound society, but amidst the meticulous detail and opulent settings, it's hard to connect with the characters on an emotional level."
I really, really liked this movie. Beautifully filmed, acted and written. A wonderful, intelligent period piece.
