80. The Bad Sleep Well (1960)
Leonard Maltin's Rating :
Should be :
IMDB Rating : 8.0
Rotten Tomatoes Rating : 100%
In his review Leonard says: "Kurosawa effectively captures the spirit of 1940's Warner Bros. crime dramas in this engrossing tale of rising executive Mifune and corruption in the corporate world."
I know that Leonard is giving ratings for the general movie going public, but that is no reason for him to give an insulting three star rating to this great movie. His review is spot on, but he chickens out when it comes to giving it the four star rating it deserves.
Kurosawa is best known for his samurai movies, but some of his best movies were set in the post-war years.
It is a foreign film with subtitles, it is 151 minutes long and it is a variation on Hamlet, but the movie shouldn't be punished for these reasons. Just saying that it is subtitles will scare away the people who need to be scared away, but giving it the four stars in deserves may draw in some viewers who love good movies.
Twisting, turning, engrossing, challenging and wonderful. Yhis film needs to be seen and it needs a four star rating.
